“Everything is possible to whom that believes” Jesus
One night my 7-years-old nephew had a headache, and he asked me if I could buy him a painkiller. Thinking giving him a drug would be a bit much, I went to the shop and got him a sachet of Coca Cola powder, diluted it with water, and gave it to him. After he drank it, I asked him how he felt. He said, “I am well”, and went to sleep. That was the start of a revelation about the power of faith and belief. Though the sachet has no known chemical to relieve headaches, the belief of taking a “pain reliever” made him feel better.
Many years later sitting in a pharmacology class my professor discussed about the phenomenon called placebo. A placebo is a sugar pill that is given to patients in a medical trial to compare with a drug that has potential healing ability. Some patients were given the sugar pill while others were given the pill with a drug that is being tested for its healing potency. Often as many people who take the sugar pill will get healed as the people who take the drug. This phenomenon is called the placebo effect. The sugar pill is called placebo.
For a drug to be approved for public use, it must pass the placebo test. The placebo effect is so prevalent that only 10% of the drugs tested passes the test. 90% of the drugs fail the test because the placebo pill will have considerable healing potency as the drug. This means faith has almost the same potency as 90% of the drugs tested. Even those that passed the test must cure 20% more people than the placebo heals.
Jesus said, “that nothing is impossible to him/her that believes”. And then came a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years and said if I touched Jesus’s cloth I would be healed. She touched the tip of His cloth and was healed. Jesus asked who touched me as He felt power transferring from him to her amidst the crowd that was pressing Him. A touch of faith is greater than the pressing one without faith. Now the placebo shed a light into the miraculous power of faith that makes the impossible possible. Therefore, religion is not void of power. What God has always been saying- believe! The Bible asks us to believe 257- times and not to fear 365 times. God could not emphasize faith more.
Faith is a substance you can measure. The difference between who bungee jumps and who does not dare is faith. Those who believe have faith in the ropes, the people who provide the service, the safety rules, while those who don't jump have little faith that they will be safe. This is true in many areas.
Faith is the biggest factor in those who did accomplish great things and those who didn’t. It is those who say it is possible despite the odds that make it happen. The Elon Musk of our time and the architects and builders of the pyramids are believers in achieving the greatest. Without faith nothing can be made. And the Bible says that without faith in Him it is impossible to please God. It is no wonder the greatest of miracles were performed by those who believe in God and his miraculous power.
